How To Make A Solar Panel From Scratch - DIY Solar Panel

Making a solar panel on your own is not necessarily rocket science but it is not the simplest of tasks either. However, with the right tools and components and closely following the given instructions, you should be successful in learning how to make a solar panel for your house.

Iron Solder

Things needed:

Iron Solder

- Photovoltaic cells
- All the tools in your house
- Spare picture frames
- Soldering iron
- Black and red insulated wire
- Silicone glue
- Glass or plastic cover
- Multimeter

Getting started

Buying the right kind of photovoltaic or solar cell is important. Several types of photovoltaic cells such as crystalline silicon cells and copper indium selenide cells are in the market. They are easy to find at the store and are even available online. The number of cells you need to buy is dependent on how many panels you are going to make and how much electricity you intend to produce from that.

Step 1

The cells you purchased will have lines on one side of them. Place the cells on the plastic or the glass sheet in such a way that the lined side faces the sun. There is another thing you need to know about how you can increase the voltage and the current; placing all the cells on the same wire as a series increases the voltage whereas, placing all the cells in different wires that are connected parallel to each other increases the current.

Step 2

This step is simple science. Any cell or battery has two ends - a positive and a negative. Similarly, the solar cell has positive and negative ends and these ends need to be connected logically to let the current flow through the panel. Hence, the negative side of each cell is connected to the positive side and the same is carried out for all cells. When this is done, solder the cells together by a portion of their tabs using the soldering iron. By the end of doing this, all your cells would be attached in a definite pattern.

Step 3

It is time to frame your solar cells. Stick them with their backs to the frame and slowly remove the plastic or glass sheet. Make sure that no glue falls on the lined sides of the solar cells. Next, all the negative and positive tabs of the cells have to be soldered separately. The negative tabs would now be on the cells' side with lines and the positive tabs would be on the other side. Solder a wire to all the negatives with black insulated wire and all the positives with red insulated wire. Replace the plastic cover. Now you will have two wires hanging out of the system.

Step 4

Now using the multimeter, check the amount of voltage and current passing through your panel and choose any gadgets that share the same energy specifications. If they do, then connect the positive and negative terminals respectively and finally, your brand new solar panel is in use.

Pace MBT-250 Soldering Station - Review

A few days ago I had to replace one part of my Pace MBT-250-SDPT, Solder/Desolder Station: the heater assembly for the TJ-70 Mini ThermoJet handpiece. The TJ-70 Mini ThermoJet handpiece provides continuous flow of precision focused hot air for component installation and SMT land preparation. The cost of the part was 5 (without shipping charges). It is also possible to buy the complete ThermoJet handpiece assembly (TJ-70 for the Pace MBT250-SDPT) for 5.

Iron Solder

At same time, a friend of mine bought brand new AOYUE 2702 soldering station for 0. He was very happy with this soldering station. I had the opportunity to use this soldering station and it works great. An important thing to note is that the complete AOYUE 2702 soldering system costs less then one hanpiece for the Pace MBT250.

Iron Solder

So why would you pay 00 for Pace MBT250 when you can buy AOYUE 2702 which is similar soldering system for 0?

I like both soldering stations. AOYUE 2702 soldering system is excellent soldering system and will cover most of your soldering needs.

However, if you need soldering station very often and use it on daily basic for a variety of soldering and desoldering project at your company, you should consider the Pace MBT250 soldering system as your first option. Serious consideration should be given to this station if you prefer good quality over low cost and don't mind spending the extra buck to get best soldering station on market. In other words, Pace MBT250 is really professional soldering system and soldering system for professionals.

In my opinion, Pace MBT250 soldering station is little bit overpriced, but on other hand it really is the best soldering system available, so over time it will pay off.

I have been using this soldering station mostly for soldering and desoldering surface mount components with the use of a microscope (a microscope is not part of Pace MBT250-SDPT station). It really is a joy to work with this station and it is great feeling knowing that it can satisfy all your soldering needs - with the exception of BGA (ball grid array) - surface mount components that have all leads underneath.

Aoyue soldering station 2702 comes with only 3 handpieces. Pace soldering rework station MBT250-SDPT comes with the following 4 handpices:

-PS-90 Pace soldering pencil,

-SX-90 Desoldering Handpiece,

-TP-65 ThermoPik Handpiece

-TT-65 ThermoTweez Handpiece

In addition, two optional handpieces are available separately:

-TJ-70 ThermoJet

-TJ-80 Precision ThermoJet

PS-90 soldering pencil is a very slim iron ideal for soldering of surface mount components as well as for soldering of through hole components.

SX-90 Desoldering Handpiece works as desoldering pump, making it very useful for desoldering of components and cleaning holes on printed circuit boards.

TT-65 ThermoTweez Handpiece is an excellent tool for removing surface mount resistors and capacitors.

I do not use the TP-65 ThermoPik Handpiece much because for each surface mount IC you want to remove, you need the matching tip -same size and shape as the particular IC. I think this handpiece is great for removing ICs in high volume manufacturing where you use same tip for removing same IC.

I give 5 out of 5 stars to this Pace MBT250 soldering system.

Home Solar Power Made Easy

Solar power has been scoffed at in the past. The scoffers admit there is an abundant supply of energy coming from the sun but then add that the cost to harness that power is far too expensive. But the wonderful thing about technology is that it keeps changing and it keeps getting better and better. Now, instead of having to buy an expensive solar panel and all the equipment you need to reduce your electric bill every month, you can actually make your own solar panel system at home. As a matter of fact, it is possible for your entire residence to be completely free from the power company just by implementing solar into your home.

Iron Solder

As the title of this article suggests, solar power at home can be easy. There are many things that attract the light and heat of the sun like metal, glass, and mirrors. These materials can be used to not just draw in the power of the sun but to hold onto it as well and transfer that energy to a battery. Even a simple car battery can be used to hold the power generated by your solar power system.

Iron Solder

Do-it-yourself solar power programs do not have to be difficult. As long as you can read and follow instructions you can be on your way to energy independence. And the great thing about solar power is that you can start small if you want and grow your solar power system as you feel the need. You probably want to get the basics of how solar works before you go all out, but when you start seeing the savings on your power bill you may reconsider and start adding on to your solar project.

It seems everything carries a cost these days, so it is nice to know that the sun's energy is still free and available. You may need to buy a few materials for your home solar system to work but a lot of it can be made from things lying around the house. The basic components of a solar panel will be solar cells, some solder, flux, a soldering iron, and tabbing.

In a short period of time you can be enjoying your homemade solar panel system and helping the environment at the same time. Solar power is being used in places of business and by large companies but now you can have it at home as well.

How To Make Your Own Stained Glass Lamp Shades

Are you thinking about making your own stained glass lamp shade? If so, this guide will help you understand what this fun hobby entails. It's extremely difficult for starters, but just like anything in life it will get easier with time.

Iron Solder

There are a few reasons that this hobby is difficult. The first reason is due to the odd shape of a lamp shade. It's not like a flat window or a door, so it makes things tricky. Due to this reason, it makes it quite difficult to be accurate when preparing the stained glass for your lamp shade. As I always suggest, you're probably better off starting with something easier.

Iron Solder

If you're ready to take on the challenge of making a stained glass shade, your success will vary depending on the type of pattern you choose to go with. Patterns that are folded or distorted are always harder. To make things easier, consider using a pattern that's from a book or a picture.

When we prepare stained glass windows, the first step is to create the pattern on a large piece of glass. The same rule applies for a lamp cover or shade. Along the pattern, you'll then need to use a glass cutter to cut along the edges of the pattern.

From here, you'll need to rejoin the pieces together. This will create the pattern on the lamp shade through the joints. When you're doing a stained glass window, these pieces are all joined on one shot, but for a lamp shade each wall needs to be done separately. Most lamp shades will have six walls and at the end of each wall, that's when they're ready to join each other. Once they're joined together, the next step is to pull them up.

When you're attaching the walls, the edges of the pieces must all be smooth. If they're not smooth, it will be very difficult to join them. When you're preparing the different shapes of the lamp shade, you'll need to use a solder. Instead of soldering them from the edges, use the front and back. If by accident you find some solder on the edges, be sure to melt them away before joining the walls.

The part where most people have problems is when they're putting the walls intact. If one of the pieces breaks or falls, you'll have to start over. This can get frustrating! For this reason, you must use something to help support when you're putting the walls together. A wire is a great tool for this. Once you complete the soldering, this is when you can remove the wire.

I'm sure it seems like a tough project and it is! However, with some practice you can be on your way to making your own stained glass lamp shades.

How to Solder For Radiator Repair

Radiator is a dynamic and an imperative to regulating the car's temperature low like perspiration, which is the body's ability to keep you refrigerate. The auto radiator uses ambient air to cool down the coolant that flow through, it is usually at the front of the vehicle. Automobile radiators are either made up of aluminum or brass and copper. Plastic could also be used for the tanks at either ends. The radiator repair techniques may differ, depending on the automobile and other material.

Iron Solder

There are two main kinds of radiators; one is cross flow and the other is vertical flow. You need to locate the tanks. Whether they are at the top or bottom, then it is a vertical flow. If they are on the sides, then it is a cross flow. You need to check the tanks if they are made of metal or plastic. The radiator construction material must be determined. The radiator must be made of brass or copper if it is painted. If it is shiny like chrome, the radiator is made of aluminum.

Iron Solder

Repair could be done many times, if the damage to the radiator is not wide-ranging and extensive. The repairs could be done many times by soldering. Soldering is not like welding or brazing as it does not bond together the two models physically, but it is a similar patch, which is considered to be a pleasant one. Welding is considered to be necessarily better and gives an improved outlook. As much as the solder repair is of a good quality, the bond for the radiator could last for the lifetime.

There are specific instructions that could be followed;

The first step is to make the damaged and fragmented area ready for soldering. This involves removing the paint with a wire brush, or by using a small grinding wheel along with removing any sharp edges or burrs that might occur. You must be careful, not to make the damage grow worse, if you are using a grinder, as the radiators are made up of ultra-light material. You can then clean the area with strong solvents like brake or Green cleaners, so that the fuse support and stay with the radiator without causing any problems.

The next step is that you should solder the damaged and troubled area thoroughly. You must use a high-wattage soldering solid wire or metal. You need to heat up the gun carefully to get the solder melt down and bonds with the surface of the radiator. Then heat up the damaged part of the radiator along the soldering iron, introducing the wire slowly with it, try not to drip the solder itself into the radiator. After that, slow down the work when you get down the crack until and unless it is fully covered with the solder. You must always remember to unplug the tool when you are done with soldering, as most of them do not turnoff themselves.

Third step is to drudge the solder has no sharp edges or burrs. This could be done with a wire brush or a small wheel. The concept behind is to make the solder line as easy as possible and also to remove the contaminants, if any are there. The repaired portion could be left alone or even repainted. You are required to fill the radiator with the coolant, which would allow the car get the operating temperature low, keeping your eyes on the soldered area for leaks.

Stained Glass Equipment

Glass equipment as an artwork was known to people since times. The popularity of stained glass was revived in the 1960s. The stained glass art and equipment was earlier confined to decorating churches, state owned buildings and few residences. From 1960 onwards, stained glass came to be extensively used for making jewelry boxes, mirrors, wall sconces, windows and other decorations.

Iron Solder

Every form of art and craft requires some kind of investment in special tools or equipment. Some basic equipment needs to be used for making stained crafts in glass too. The everyday tools used at homes like scissors and pliers can also be put to use. However, using the proper kind of equipment will produce a better stained glass art. Poor quality of tools can lead to irritation and abandonment of the project. It would be good to use the below mentioned stained glass equipment.

It is advisable for beginners not to initially invest a lot on the stained glass equipment. A specially designed, unusual pair of pattern shears will be needed for making the craft. This can be bought for twenty dollars and above. Cheaper, twenty-five cent substitute, razor blades can also be used. Regular household scissors can also serve the purpose for amateurs.

As the artwork skills turn profitable, better stained glass equipment can be bought and used. Moving on with the basic list, soldering iron with an iron cased tip would be an important tool. Soldering iron can be found in any local hardware store or depot. Its price varies from ten to fourteen dollars. It is suggested not to buy a cheap soldering iron as they do not heat uniformly and do not last longer. Those who are seriously committed to make a stained glass work can buy a 100 to 150 watt soldering iron.

The temperature of the soldering iron should be controlled by a dimmer or a resistor. It prevents the iron from getting overheated. Such a rheostat unit can also be purchased separately to plug-in the soldering iron for use. Another necessary supply is the glass cutter. It is relatively cheaper, priced from three dollars and above. You can buy two different shaped cutters. When not in use, glass cutters soaked in kerosene or oil remain lubricated and reduce friction.

A basic glazing knife is used for various purposes while crafting a stained art glass. It is used to shape the edges of the glass or the lead. Grozing pliers with sleek and narrow jaw saves your fingers while working on delicate glass and glass breaks. A lead stretcher or any other vise, except wood or pipe vises, help to hold the lead strip for stretching. It is more flexible and bends easily along the edges of the stained glass pieces.

Among the equipment, flux is a chemical to clean the copper foil or lead vise when preparing for soldering the stained glass. When buying the most essential supplies for the craft, the glass itself, you can visit a crafts shop that sells glass. It can also be shipped or ordered by mail from a specific glass manufacturer.

Stained art glass is priced higher than normal glass used for windows. When bought in bulk, it can cost you less. Prices range from four dollars for a square foot and higher depending on size and quality. Glass equipment also includes solder, drawing paper and carbon paper. Solder can be bought from any hardware store for less than two dollars a spool which would be sufficient. Drawing and carbon papers can be used for sketching the artwork patters for glass.

Use goggles and gloves for protecting you eyes and hands. Assemble all the equipment in your work area or a safe place out of kids reach. Using the proper tools, creativity and dedication, stained glass proves to be a profitable hobby.

How to Build a Battery Desulfator

You probably already know that you can recondition an old car battery such that it gets back to working like new. But, do you know exactly how the reconditioning process works? Is it enough to take a standard battery charger and recharge your old battery until it regains full working capacity? Not really. You see, batteries that have been in storage for a long time usually have some sulphuric build-up on their lead plates. This is known as sulfation, and reversing this process is an important part of battery reconditioning.

Iron Solder

There are several commercial battery desulfators that you can choose from. However, they can be a bit costly. The good news is that you can actually build your own desulfator for a much lower cost. Following are instructions on how to build a battery desulfator that is small enough to fit inside an Altoids can. Just remember to wear protective gear and eyewear before you start working on your desulfator.

Iron Solder

The first thing you need to do is prepare all the components for building your battery desulfator. Using a double-adhesive tape, attach a piece of perf-board to the bottom (on the inside) of an Altoids can. Take some adhesive copper foil and affix it to the bottom of the perf-board. This will serve as the desulfator's ground bus. Arrange a field-effect transistor as well as two switches, resistors, pots, and one LED onto the board such that it requires only the shortest possible length of wire connections. Secure each component into place with strong glue. For insulation, attach thin cardboard around the perf-board using a double-adhesive tape.

Now you are ready to drill the necessary holes into the Altoids can. The first hole goes into the left side of the can. This hole will be used for the lead-acid battery desulfator's output wires. Take note that the wires should not directly touch the Altoids can. Therefore, be sure to attach a rubber grommet to the hole. Next, drill three holes into the other side of the can and then drill one hole into the can's lid. The hole on the lid will allow you to observe the LED when your lead-acid battery desulfator is in use. You should also make holes in the insulation cardboard wherever they come into contact with the wire holes and vent holes you just created.

Finally, it is time to solder the necessary wires. Be sure to choose thick but flexible lead wires for your battery desulfator and keep the cables that lead to the battery as short as possible in order to prevent losses. Connect the wires and then secure them with the use of 60/40 solder and a thin-lipped soldering iron. It is advisable to hold a wire in place with pliers while you are soldering to make sure that it is attached properly. You may take parts from some surface-mount components and use them as electrolytic capacitors. Finally, solder the wires into these capacitors.

You are now ready to use your desulfator by connecting it to your battery using output leads and clips. There you have it - your quick guide on how to build a battery desulfator.
