Making a Solar Panel - Stringing Cells Together

Making solar panels involves several procedures. There are solar panel kits available in stores, which includes the procedure on how to assemble them. It will be helpful also to search on-line for some video illustration on how to assemble a solar panel. A video illustration is easier to follow than the printed guidelines. You can also purchase a reliable how-to guide which will already provide you with all the information necessary for building solar panels.

Iron Solder

In appearance, the front side of the solar cell is smooth and glossy. The cell has two grooves lined parallel across its face. This is where the tabbing wire is soldered. The backside of the cell is not glossy and has pads line-up parallel across the cell. This is where the excess wire of the other cell will be connected.

Iron Solder

One crucial part in assembling the solar panel is connecting the cells together with the tabbing wires. This is done when the solar cells have already been tabbed and are ready for stringing.

Take note of the cell after tabbing that there are two wires soldered in front of the cell parallel to each other. There should be excess tabbing wires, which will be used for connection to the other cell.

1. Clear the area of the workplace so that there will be ample space for stringing cells together. The typical number of cells in one panel is six.

2. Lay down the six cells in the table or platform (if you have one) and align them on the edge. There would be some adjustment on their distance upon soldering them. Take note that as long as the cells are fairly close to each other that will work out fine.

3. Prepare the cell by tinning the pads found at the back. Start by putting flux on each of the pads (do not forget to use flux pen). In placing solder in the pads, melt the solder in the tip of the iron first. Then dab the melted solder on the pads. By doing the tinning this way, the solder will stick on the pads very well. When tinning is done to all the cell pads, then stringing cells together will be the next step.

4. Lay down together two cells in the table face down, aligning them at an appropriate distance. Straighten the two tabbing wire of the first cell and lay them over the pads of the second cell. This is soldering preparation.

5. Melt the solder in the tip of the soldering iron, and dab it to the tabbing wire that is laid over the pad. Repeat the procedure, until the tabbing wire is soldered to all the pads in the second cell. In order to guide the tabbing wire in place to the pads while soldering, use scissor tips or any other rod that will fit the purpose.

6. Lay down another cell next to the one where the tabbing wires were soldered. Do the same following the last procedure in soldering the tabbing wires on the pads. This time, it will be the excess wires of the second cell, soldering to them to the third cell.

7. Do the same to the rest of the other cells, which totals to six cells in a string.

When stringing cells together is done to all of the six cells, you have already completed one panel. Repeat the procedure to make a total of six panels.
